Frequently asked questions about CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701)
What is the current Security+ exam code? SY0-701. It launched in November 2023 and replaced SY0-601. A newer version (Security+ V8) is expected in late 2026, with SY0-701 retiring after an overlap window around mid-2027, but SY0-701 is the current exam to study today.
How long is the exam, and how many questions? Up to 90 questions, a mix of multiple-choice and performance-based questions, in 90 minutes. The performance-based questions usually appear near the start.
What is the passing score? 750 on a scaled range of 100 to 900. Because the scoring is scaled and performance-based questions can weigh more, 750 does not translate to a flat percentage.
Do I need any prerequisites? No mandatory prerequisites. CompTIA recommends Network+ and about two years of IT experience with a security focus, but beginners can pass with a longer study runway.
What are the five exam domains? General Security Concepts (12 percent), Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations (22 percent), Security Architecture (18 percent), Security Operations (28 percent), and Security Program Management and Oversight (20 percent). Security Operations is the largest.
Is Security+ approved for DoD 8140 / 8570? Yes. Security+ is an approved 8140/8570 IAT Level II baseline certification for U.S. government and military IT roles.
How long is the certification valid? Three years from your test date, regardless of which exam version is current afterward. It renews with continuing education (50 CEUs over three years).

Can I take the exam online? Yes. It is delivered through Pearson VUE, either online-proctored from home or at a test center.
What is the difference between the standard voucher and the retake voucher? The standard voucher covers one attempt. The retake voucher bundles a second attempt: if you do not pass the first time, you can sit the exam once more on the same voucher before it expires.
