Is CompTIA Security+ Worth It in 2026?
For most people entering cybersecurity, yes, and it is one of the most cost-effective certifications you can hold. But worth it depends on where you are starting from. What Security+ does for a career
Security+ is the credential employers most often name as the baseline for a first security role. Three things give it durable value in 2026.
It is the common screening filter. A large share of entry and mid-level security postings list Security+ by name, so holding it gets your application past the first cut in a way few other entry certifications do.
It satisfies a hard requirement. Security+ is approved by the U.S. Department of Defense as an 8140/8570 IAT Level II baseline certification. For government and defense-contractor roles, that is often a mandatory checkbox, not a preference, which makes the certification a gate you cannot pass any other way.
It is vendor-neutral and current. SY0-701 added zero trust, cloud and hybrid security, supply-chain risk, and AI-driven threats, so it reflects the environments employers actually run rather than one vendor's stack.
The jobs it opens
Security+ maps to the first rung of a security career and the security-adjacent roles just below it. Common titles include security analyst, SOC analyst, systems administrator with security duties, network administrator moving into security, junior security engineer, and security specialist roles in government and defense contracting. It is rarely the certification that lands a senior role on its own, but it is very often the one that gets someone into the field in the first place, which is exactly its job.
It also sets up everything after it. Cost against return
The exam is a single voucher rather than an ongoing commitment, and the certification stays valid for three years from your test date, renewable with continuing education. Against the roles it helps unlock, that is a modest cost for a strong return, particularly for anyone targeting a government or contractor position where it is required. For someone already working in IT and moving toward security, it often formalizes capability they can partly demonstrate already, which is the cheapest kind of return there is.
Who should look elsewhere, or wait
Security+ is not the right first step for everyone. If you have no IT background at all, you may find it smoother to build fundamentals first, for example with Network+, before taking Security+. If your goal is a specialized track, an analyst path leans toward CySA+ and an offensive path toward PenTest+, though most people still take Security+ first as the common foundation. And if you are aiming at senior architecture or management roles, Security+ is a starting point, not a destination; the expert-level credentials come later.
One timing note. A new version of Security+ is expected in late 2026, with the current SY0-701 retiring after an overlap window around mid-2027. This does not change whether Security+ is worth it.
